BLOG: Week in the life - Chloe O'Neill

Back

Marketing student, Chloe O'Neill, reflects on her time with us last week.

Wirral student, Chloe O’Neill, undertook a work experience placement with us last week, to get some first hand experience of working within a busy marketing department. One of her tasks was to write a blog summarising her placement, which can be found below.

I would first like to note how thankful I am for this unbelievable opportunity with Sciontec Developments Limited (Sciontec), it has broadened my knowledge within the marketing sector and I have loved every minute of it! The team has given me so much support and taught me the “behind the scenes” of marketing and I would definitely recommend Sciontec and KQ Liverpool to any students who want to get work experience in the business sector.

Monday

At 10am I arrived at the Liverpool Science Park cafe to meet up with Liz, Senior Marketing Manager. She gave me a run down of what I will be working on for the week and when events were being held for me to get involved in. Liz gave me an overview of what marketing is all about and her job role!

Mid day, just before lunch, we headed up to The Spine which had an event for a number of high schools from across Liverpool City Region, these schools were competing to design a medical device for the NHS. All of the students were so bright and had so many intelligent ideas. The winning group won a fabulous £25 gift voucher for Liverpool ONE and the opportunity for their creation to be transformed into a prototype!

I was lucky enough to judge the first round of designs alongside Liz, Emily and Codi! After that, around 2pm, Liz and I headed down to CENTRAL TECH where I worked on a Sciontec lead generation campaign to fill out the remaining desks and offices in the building, which I will be presenting to the team on Thursday afternoon.

I finished at 4pm. It was a very successful first day and I am excited to see what the rest of the week brings!

Tuesday

I arrived at iC2, Liverpool Science Park, and I started off by having a meeting with Liz, Sally and Martin about the current marketing activity and the progress with how many office spaces are getting let. We also spent some time discussing and planning the summer social which is happening tomorrow.

Straight after that I had a workshop with Martin about Paid advertising, SEO and analytics training, which was interesting to find more about the different ways people can find the office spaces other than just through the Sciontec website. We were finished by 12pm so I had a lunch break. I went down to Subway which was really convenient since it was only a 2 minute walk.

I came back and worked on my Sciontec lead generation campaign task, which is to create a way to fill up the remaining office and coworking spaces in CENTRAL TECH.

At 13:30, Claire Kidman from Knowledge Quarter Liverpool came to the office and told me all about her job role and gave me a workshop on bookings, events and partnerships. I really enjoyed the events section of her job as it is something I am also interested in, and it made me realise how much detail goes into organising one.

After that I carried on working on my campaign and shortly after it was 4pm!

Wednesday

Wednesday came round so quickly! I came to CENTRAL TECH and started my day off with Liz as she gave me an introduction to content platforms like, Campaign Monitor, Canva, and WordPress (the CMS for the Sciontec website). I learnt so much, from making a personalised QR code to editing and publishing a news article.

I helped make and publish stories like the “Livercool” Awards 2025 which both Emily and Sally had been nominated for, as well as updating the Jelly Liverpool event by adding on the extra dates for this year.

I ate my lunch and came back to the office to meet James who was here to film CENTRAL TECH for the updated Sciontec AI video. I loved watching the behind the scenes of how everything plans out with so much thought and detail. I even got to be in some of the shots filmed which was such a fun experience. This took up most of the afternoon as the rest of the team was working hard to set up all of the decorations and drinks for the summer social!

Thursday

It’s my last day here and it has been such a good experience. I’ve learnt so much about what marketing is all about and the different sectors you can be involved with. I am very thankful for the Sciontec team helping with this passion of mine.

I started my morning off with creating an image and design to promote the coworkers Headshot day. This took me a while to do as I was trying to figure out the best design, making sure it is perfect.

Afterwards I met up with Barry who gave me a talk all about comms, PR and media relations. This was really useful as he had so much experience with lots of different sectors and working independently, he also gave me some advice on universities and how he got into the job which was very interesting.

I walked to Tesco afterwards to get some lunch and once again it was very handy that CENTRAL TECH has shops so close! I came back and kept on working on the Headshot day event post, I finalised the design and added a description about the day on the Sciontec website.

Finally I gave my presentation for the lead generation campaign to Sally and Leanne, they loved hearing my ideas and were very supportive.

Summary

Overall my work experience with Sciontec has been incredible and it has definitely made me come to realise how much more I would love to work in the marketing industry! Thank you Sciontec team!
