Digital health tech experts recognised for preventative applications

Safe Steps’ fall prevention app and COVID tracker transform local health care.

Having recently being named as “Ones to watch” in the LCR Tech Climbers 2021 list, health tech scale-up, Safe Steps, has also been awarded the BioNow ‘Product of the Year’ accolade for their fall prevention app.

The Safe Steps risk assessment tool was originally conceptualised from company CEO, Lee Omar’s personal experience, in wanting to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of care home residents. By developing an intuitive, digital solution for use in care homes and hospitals, staff using the app can more easily undertake their mandatory checks and receive a more holistic overview of the assessment results.

The data collected and displayed on the Safe Steps dashboard is also linked to residents’ NHS patient records, giving a wide range of healthcare professionals access to valuable information in order to take the appropriate action.

The world’s most successful falls prevention app is now live in 434 care homes, with outcomes indicating a 28% reduction in falls and a 20% reduction in ambulance callouts within the first 15 months of use.

Paul Parr, Chief Operating Officer for Safe Steps, said:

“By consolidating fall data, we can identify where falls are most likely to occur, at what times and by who, enabling care home staff to undertake preventative measures to reduce such occurrences.

“We are delighted that our product has been well received by both front-line staff and industry peers and are proud to be contributing to health outcome improvements within our local community.”

As part of their mission to use innovation to help people remain out of hospital and enjoy healthier, happier lives for longer, Safe Steps have recently pivoted their activities to benefit the Covid-19 pandemic response.

Co-created with frontline NHS staff, GPs and a network of care homes across the UK, Safe Steps have also developed a Covid-19 Core Data Tracker which gathers key Covid-19 clinical information and monitors symptoms at scale. The outbreak management tool also monitors vaccine uptake, providing a high-level overview of real time data.

This information can be accessed via a central dashboard, which enables multiple teams to communicate more effectively across multiple sites and allows Clinicians to respond to the daily pressures faced at the front line quickly and confidently.

The Safe Steps Covid Tracker has already been implemented across Greater Manchester, with further pilots being undertaken within Cheshire and Merseyside. Safe Steps’ fall prevention app is already being widely used in Wirral, but it is expected that both products will be fully rolled out across the North West by the end of summer 2021.

For the past three years, Safe Steps has been based within Liverpool Science Park (LSP) with additional colleagues working remotely from Italy, Poland and USA. Their team boasts a wealth of talent across leadership, operational delivery, admin and technical departments, with Developers and Data Scientists creating a range of disruptive solutions.

The SME has benefitted from the innovation centre’s location and onsite facilities, as well as being surrounded by a hub of sector experts also on site. Valuable introductions and connections have been made with other LSP customers to date, including Liverpool Health Partners and Liverpool John Moores University, who are currently undertaking an evaluation of their MedTech apps.

Safe Steps are busy working on a number of other projects which will transform health care locally and are aiming to make Cheshire and Merseyside one of the safest places to be, in relation to falls and outbreak prevention.
